VIVO S1 DESIGN AND CONNECTIVITY

The Vivo S1 comes with a new diamond cut design giving a premium look to it. Vivo has done a great working in designing the look of the device and it is easily observable. The back is a plastic body design and looks amazing. The phone feels quite light in hand and the weight distribution of the device is superb. However, Gorilla glass protection is absent. Vivo S1 Pro uses Schott Sensation 3D protection instead. The device comes in Skyline Blue and Diamond Black color variants.
The right side of the phone contains volume rocker and power on-off buttons. The top side of the phone is left completely blank. The bottom side contains speaker grills, microphone, micro USB port with OTG suppport, and 3.5 mm jack. The left contains the sim card tray and a special button for calling Google Assistant or the Vivo's own assistant called 'Jovi'.The sim tray is dual nano with a dedicated SD card slot which is a good feature. The back consists of just rear cameras as the device follows the new trend of the in-display fingerprint sensor.
Vivo S1 comes with a 6.38" super AMOLED FHD+ display accompanied by a beautiful waterdrop notch.
Also, the Vivo S1 connects Wifi, 4G+5G, Bluetooth v5.0, GPS/A-GPS and has all necessary sensors.

VIVO S1 CAMERAS AND SOFTWARE

Vivo has always delivered us the best and promising cameras it can. Vivo S1 also comes with great cameras. The device comes with an AI Triple Camera which includes a 16-MP(f/1.8) rear camera using Sony IMX499 sensor accompanied by an 8-MP(f/2.2) super wide and a 2MP(f/2.4) depth sensor with a flash. The front camera is a 32MP selfie camera.

The camera includes all required necessary features that will satisfy a mobile photographer. The device captures beautiful images with good focusing and nice composure. The camera also comes with many AI stickers and other options to help you show your creativity in your captured shots. Wide-angle shots are a key feature of Vivo S1 camera's making this phone perfect for groupies. Image stabilization and edge detection work well. The night performance of this phone is also appreciable and the noise was mostly under control. Yet, blur can easy be observed in shots of objects in motion. The front selfie camera captured excellent photos with a little bit of skin lightening and smoothening as expected from Vivos cameras. Vivo S1 can shoot 4K videos at 30fps. Videos can be shot at a wide-angle and standard angle.

The Vivo S1 runs on the new Funtouch OS 9 UI which is a heavily modified version of Android 9 Pie. There is no App drawer and all the apps are found by swiping the screen which follows the 'iOS-style'. Vivo Z1 Pro comes with preinstalled apps including V-Appstore, Vivo Browser, Vivocloud data backup service, Easyshare file sharing tool, I theme and I Manager. Fortunately, all these are customizable and can easily be removed. Funtouch OS has some useful features such as one tap screenshots, app cloning, and USB file sharing. Vivo's own assistant called 'Jovi' is always present there to assist you and can easily be accessed by pressing the button on the left side of the device below the sim card tray.

VIVO S1 PERFORMANCE AND BATTERY LIFE
Vivo S1 Performance and Battery life

VIVO S1 PERFORMANCE AND BATTERY LIFE

The Vivo S1 is powered by the octa-core Mediatek Helio P65 processor with two variants of 4GB and 6GB RAM making it the first smartphone to do so. The power of the processor is clearly visible while working on the phone. Even after opening 25 apps in background switching between them was smooth.

The gaming performance of the smartphone is decent. High-end games such as PUBG Mobile and Asphalt 9: Legends worked on Medium graphics settings. The experience of playing them was fine but frame drops and lags were experienced at high settings. Vivo S1 also features the Ultra gaming mode which brings many new features for gamers such as preventing calls and notifications while gaming and optimizing the device for a better gaming experience.
With light to moderate usage, we concluded that the massive 4500 mAh battery can easily last two days. Heavy usage drains the battery fastly but the Vivo S1  supports what Vivo calls "Dual Engine fast charging" technology with the 18 W charger that came along with the mobile accessories. As far as we tested the device charged up pretty quickly and can easily meet the expectations of buyers.

WHO SHOULD BUY VIVO S1?

The Vivo S1 is a decent device for any usual Indian user. If the look of the device is your first priority, then this device is a must-buy for you. The phone is light and gives a classy look to its owner. The diamond-cut black variant gives a strong masculine look and the Skyline Blue a beautiful feminine look so the device will be a satisfaction for every type of buyer.

WHO SHOULD NOT BUY VIVO S1?

Personally, in my opinion, the Vivo S1 may be a good looking phone but the device performance is not up to the mark. Bringing in a new Mediatek P65 processor just downgraded the performance of the device and also lowered its value for money. For me, performance is the first priority and not the design of the device. Even Vivo Z1 Pro brings better features than Vivo S1 at a relatively cheaper price. I don't know what Vivo was thinking while making this device and for me, it is a sure disappointment. Not only this but the device also lacks USB Type-C and Notification LED which is a minus point. Also, if you are a fan of stock android, then you will surely miss that feeling in the modified version called the FunTouch OS UI and it will take some time for you to adapt.

REPORTED ISSUES IN VIVO Z1 PRO!

The rear camera of Vivo S1 isn't working well with Portrait mode. There are poor edge detections and almost no background blur. IDK if this is just an issue in my review unit or it is present in all units. But I hope Vivo fixes it ASAP.
